"If We Don't Do It Then Who?"

E.O. Ojofeitimi, director of the Institute of Public Health at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, says maternal and child health depends on a healthy pregnancy. “During pregnancy, there should be enough food and enough care and monitoring. When a woman is poorly fed during pregnancy, the outcome will be poor in terms of low-birthweight babies. When a baby is born weighing less than 2.5 kilograms, that child has started at a disadvantage. When the woman is well fed, the child’s outcome will be better.”
