Calvin A. Lang, ScD '54, a longtime biochemistry professor at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, died February 1 at age 83. He conducted research on the role of glutathione as a key determinant of health and biological aging in mosquitoes, mice and people before retiring as professor emeritus of Biochemistry.
Victor A. McKusick, MD, the University Professor of Medical Genetics at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and an international figure in genetics research, diagnosis and treatment, died on July 22 at age 86. In a career that spanned more 60 years at Hopkins, Dr. McKusick was a pioneer in demonstrating the
genetic basis of diseases and disorders, work that laid the foundation for the discipline of medical genetics. His seminal 1966 reference work, Mendelian Inheritance in Man, a compilation of inherited disease genes, is now in its 12th edition, and is also published online.
Mary P. Sullivan, MT, MSc, a manager at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine's Division of Infectious Diseases, who spent seven years at the Rakai Health Sciences Program in Uganda where she helped to establish its HIV/AIDS research facility, died August 11 at age 47. Prior to leaving the Rakai Program in 2003, Ms. Sullivan trained her Ugandan colleagues to take over
the laboratory.
