Per legend, the countess of Chinchon is cured of malaria by a powder made from “Peruvian Bark,” or quina-quina. She introduces the powder to Europe in 1640. From malaria-ravaged Rome, Jesuits monopolize the distribution of “Jesuit powders” and bark from the later-named cinchona tree for 200 years.
