Arsenic in the Water

Photograph by Shehzad Noorani

Decades ago Bangladeshis drilled wells to avoid drinking bacteria-laden surface water. Later they learned the well water had high levels of arsenic. (“Safe” wells like this one in Morelganj Upazila are painted green.) Arsenic also taints groundwater in parts of the U.S. like South Dakota’s Badlands.
